Say goodbye to long passwords

Do you hate entering long passwords and two-factor authentication systems when logging in to a website? I am sure you do and so am I. But the things are about to change.

Today, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has officially declared Web Authentication API (WebAuthn) as a standard to secure your online accounts.

WebAuthn is already supported by leading browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge.

WebAuthn will allow users to log in to the website using FIDO security keys, biometrics and mobiles. WebAuthn is more secure than the passwords and it is simpler than remembering the long string of characters.

In an official statement, W3C and FIDO Alliance said, “It’s common knowledge that passwords have outlived their efficacy. Not only are stolen, weak, or default passwords behind 81 percent of data breaches, they are a drain of time and resources.”

WebAuthn is the core part of FIDO2 specifications. Users can easily login through physical security keys or their mobile devices.

Now we can expect a lot of web services implementing WebAuthn on their website. Dropbox was the first to implement this technique last year followed by Microsoft.

Being one of the leading software development company, we are already using this in one of our internal application and with W3C declaring it as a standard, we are excited to showcase it to our clients.
